Introduced by the Hormel Company in 1937, Spam became important to the diet of American soldiers during World War ll who could not get fresh meat on the front lines. Since US soldiers occupied many Pacific islands, Spam was introduced there, too, and became a surprisingly popular delicacy. In particular, Hawaii has taken up Spam as a part of the local cuisine. Hawaiian McDonald’s restaurants serve Spam, and now so do Hawaiian Burger Kings. In fact, some people refer to Spam as “the Hawaiian steak.”
