Complex Sentence
The next changes came about with the introduction of high-wheeled bicycles in the late Victorian period.
These were commonly known as penny farthings, since like the coins one wheel was far larger than the
other. Because the rider was sat about 10 feet (3m) up in the air, the obvious flaw was that any sudden
stop would see him flung face first over the handlebars.
Although bikes have not changed design for many years now, today’s versions are without doubt faster,
lighter and more reliable than those of the past. Indeed, it is obvious to all that cycling is presently going
through a golden age. The conjunction of new materials and advanced manufacturing methods should
bring about additional technological advances; furthermore, as the price of bikes goes down, the chance
to own and enjoy a ‘conveyance’ will be available to more people than ever before.
